VLV Spring Conference 2023

VLV held its annual Spring Conference on 11th May 2023 in central London. You can read the full programme here

Session 1 – Baroness Stowell of Beeston

The Rt Hon Baroness Stowell of Beeston MBE, Chair of the Lords Communications and Digital Committee, opened the conference. This session was chaired by Torin Douglas MBE, former BBC media correspondent. Baroness Stowell’s speech can be read here.

Session 2 – Charlotte Moore, BBC

Session 3 – Lord Tony Hall

After lunch we heard from Lord Tony Hall CBE,  former Director General of the BBC. He spoke in conversation with Colin Browne, Chairman of VLV who quizzed him on the process to appoint the BBC Chairman, the future of the BBC.

Session 4 – Is Impartiality Regulation Fit for Purpose?

The fourth session of the day was a panel session on the regulation of impartiality, chaired by broadcaster Roger Bolton. Adam Baxter, Ofcom’s Director of Broadcasting Standards, Professor Steven Barnett of the University of Westminster and Sue Inglish, former Head of Political Programmes at the BBC and Chair of The Disasters Emergency Committee all spoke. Session 5 – The Draft Media Bill

Our final session of the day examined the recently published Media Bill which the government says aims to ensure a sustainable future for public service broadcasting in the UK. This panel was chaired by Professor Steven Barnett. The speakers were Anna McNamee, Executive Director of the Sandford St Martin Trust, Lord Tom McNally, former leader of the Liberal Democrat party, House of Lords, Tim Suter, former Head of Broadcasting at DCMS and founder of Perspective Associates and Sophie Chalk, VLV’s Policy Advisor.  Sophie Chalk’s slides explaining the key provisions in the Media Bill can be downloaded here.
