VLV Jocelyn Hay Lecture: Baroness Kidron

Baroness Beeban Kidron OBE, one of the country’s foremost drama and documentary directors, cross-bench Peer and founder of the 5Rights Foundation, delivered the Jocelyn Hay Lecture on Thursday February 8th 2024 at Channel 4, London. The event was chaired by Alex Mahon, CEO of Channel 4.

Baroness Kidron’s long list of credits includes Storyville, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Victoria and Abdul and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.

She has a particular interest in digital issues after directing the 2013 documentary, InRealLife, which explored teenagers and their relationship to the internet. For the past five years she has been one of those most instrumental in ensuring better protection for children through passage of the Online Safety Bill.

While VLV’s work is primarily focused on broadcasting, the convergence of broadcast and online platforms and the growth of misinformation means the distinction between the two is becoming increasingly irrelevant.

Baroness Kidron is a member of the Global Council on Extended Intelligence; the Advisory Council for the University of Oxford’s Institute of Ethics in AI; Founding Executive Board member of the Data Protection Foundation; and member of the Executive Steering Group for the Born in Bradford Digital Makers Programme and Chairs the 5Rights Foundation’s Digital Futures Commission.

VLV established the Jocelyn Hay lecture series in 2012 in memory of VLV’s founder, Jocelyn Hay, to provide an opportunity for eminent speakers to consider the importance of high quality, trustworthy broadcasting for citizens in the UK. Previous speakers include Lord David Puttnam, Sir Peter Bazalgette, Professor Jean Seaton and Dame Mary Beard.
