                           BBC Chairman talks to Listeners and Viewers

Gavyn Davies, BBC Chairman, will speak and take questions on the future role and governance of the BBC at Voice of the Listener & Viewer’s spring conference in London on Thursday, 21 March.

Mr Davies will speak at 3pm.

The conference will start at 11.00am with a session on Broadcasting to the Nations and Regions in which the speakers will be:

Roger Laughton, Head of Media, Arts and Communications, Bournemouth University, and former Managing Director of Meridian Television;

Olwyn Hocking, Head of Regional and Local Programmes, BBC North East and Cumbria;

Robin Guthrie, former Chairman, Yorkshire Arts Association;

Professor Sylvia Harvey, Director of the Centre for Film and Television Studies, Sheffield Hallam University.

At 1.45pm, Michael Buerk will present the 2001 VLV Awards for Excellence in Radio and Television.   The VLV Awards are sponsored by the Voice of the Listener Trust.  The winners will receive engraved crystal rose bowls kindly donated by Dartington Crystal.

Commenting, VLV chair, Jocelyn Hay said: ‘VLV’s conference provides a rare chance for listeners and viewers to hear and question the BBC’s Chairman at first hand about his views on the future role and governance of the BBC , and about the development of its new services.

His remarks last week on the needs of the BBC’s audiences outside the South East of England make the event particularly timely.  The responsibility that ITV and Channel 4 also bear for meeting the needs of audiences in the nations and regions, and fears that the consolidation of ITV ownership may pose a threat to regional production and programming, will form the focus of the morning session, starting at 11.am.
