Media Literacy for Adults

Monday, 20 October, 6-8.30pm.

National Liberal Club, 1 Whitehall Place, London SW1

Television, radio and other content are now being delivered via the internet and mobile phone. What implications does this have for viewers and listeners? What new tools and critical skills will they need to acquire if they are to navigate with confidence the plethora of programmes and ancillary services now on offer?

The VLV Forum for Educational Broadcasting aims to ensure that users can acquire the necessary skills to understand the new technology, marketing techniques and messages. In this seminar, VLV will bring together a number of distinguished academics and those involved in regulating the media to share research and tease out the policy questions that the new regulator, Ofcom, will need to address in fulfilling the duty to promote media literacy laid on it by the 2003 Communications Act.

The Speakers will include:

Professor Naomi Sargant, National Institute for Adult & Continuing Education
Nancy Thumin, co-author with Dr Sonia Livingstone of the Department of Social Psychology of the London School of Economics, of research on Adult Media Literacy commissioned by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC)
Professor Sylvia Harvey, Faculty of Media and Humanities, University of Lincoln
Robin Blake, Programmes & Advertising Manager, Independent Television Commission
*Professor Stephen Heppell, Ultralab, Anglia Polytechnic University.
*To be confirmed

Commenting, VLV chair, Jocelyn Hay said: ‘There is increasing need for adults and children to be media literate and aware, not only of the way that new technology works and of what it can bring, but also of the highly sophisticated marketing techniques and messages now in use.

Important aspects of media literacy, include: the opportunity to gain more from all media in terms of education, information and entertainment; information in advance about programmes and services on offer; protection from harmful or unwanted messages.

This is the second seminar which VLV has held to raise awareness of issues which will become increasingly important in the more sophisticated but lightly regulated media environment of the future. Media literacy is an area in which VLV will become more involved and on which we look forward to cooperating with Ofcom.

Tickets: £20, including light refreshments. £10 concessionary. £5 students.
