The new regulator, Ofcom, will have responsibility for media literacy. This seminar, by the VLV Forum for Educational Broadcasting, will bring together academics, researchers, regulators and other interested parties to consider the tools and information that viewers will require if they are to be able to make full use of the services that will be available to them in the multi-channel, lightly-regulated environment of the future.

Wednesday, 5 November: Children’s Television & Radio - a Brave New World ?
10.00am - 5pm,  St Bride’s Institute, Fleet Lane, London EC4.
Tickets: £85 including lunch, and morning and afternoon refreshments.  Concessions: £45.

The new Communications Act changes the public service remit for Britain’s terrestrial broadcasters at the same time as it lifts the previous ban on foreign ownership of British radio and television companies.  Multinationals like the Disney Corporation, Viacom, and Clear Channel are reported to be interested in buying British media interests.

What impact could a change of ownership have on children’s radio and television?  How will the Content Board of the new regulator, Ofcom, ensure that British children continue to enjoy programmes that have been made in the UK and which put their interests above all others?

Confirmed speakers include:
Margaret Hodge MP, UK Minister for Children
Dorothy Prior, Controller BBC Children’s Programmes
Steven Andrew, Controller, ITV Children’s Programmes
Andrea Millwood-Hargrave, Director of ITC and Broadcasting Standards Commission Research
Anna Home, Chief Executive, Children’s Film & Television Foundation
