Education, Children, Digital & the Communications Bill
on VLV’s Autumn Agenda 

Five events will be staged this autumn by Voice of the Listener & Viewer (VLV) to raise and inform public debate about important topical issues in broadcasting. They include:

Wed. 26 September, London. Launch of the VLV Forum on Educational Broadcasting, 

6.00pm - 8.30pm. Institute of Education, Bedford Way, London WC1. Tickets £10, Concessions £7.50.

The VLV Education Forum will bring together broadcasters, programme makers, teachers, academics and students to consider current and future possibilities for educational broadcasting and related services. 

The BBC and Channel 4 have ambitious plans for using new media, including the Internet and interactive television to develop new services for schools, further education and life long learners. 

VLV is eager to encourage the development of new services but also to ensure that valuable programmes and resources continue to be broadcast free-to-view.

Sat. 13 October. ‘Broadcasting and Scottish Devolution’, Napier University Edinburgh 10.00-4.30pm. VLV. Tickets: £15, concessions £10, excluding lunch. 

VLV will join with the Royal Television Society, Radio Academy and the International Institute of Communications to hold its 11th annual conference in Scotland. 

Invited speakers include: John McCormick, controller, BBC Scotland; Richard Findlay, chairman, Scottish Radio Holdings; Professor Jean Seaton, BBC historian; David Goldberg; Glasgow University; Robert Beveridge, Napier University; Paul Brown, chief executive, Commercial Radio Companies Association; Jocelyn Hay, chairman, VLV.

Thurs. 1st November, ‘Children and Television: Predators at the Gate’ Conference Centre, Euston St, London NW1. 0930-4.30pm. Tickets: £80, concessions £18.50 including lunch.

The seventh annual conference of the VLV Forum for Children’s Broadcasting will examine the provision of television and radio programmes for children in the UK and the impact that new media, including satellite, the Internet and video games are having on audiences and producers. 

Confirmed speakers include: Nigel Pickard, BBC Controller of Children’s Television; Janie Grace, ITV Controller of Children’s Television; Andrea Millward-Hargrave, Director of Research, Broadcasting Standards Commission; Dr Maire Messenger-Davies, University of Wales, Cardiff.

Wed. 28 November. ‘Broadcasting & the New Communications Bill’. VLV’s 18th Autumn Conference, followed by 18th AGM, Hamilton House, London WC1. 10.30am - 3.30pm. Tickets £80, concessions £18.50 including lunch. 

One session will be devoted to issues arising from the Bill, followed by an open forum, another to a panel questions on digital television and radio. 

VLV has invited the Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell MP, to address a VLV Evening Westminster Seminar on the Communications Bill after Parliament returns on 15 October. Date to be confirmed
