Press Release 29 October 2001

Broadcasting and the New Environment
VLV's 18th Autumn Conference, Wednesday, 28 November,
Hamilton House, London WC1,

The morning will be devoted to an open discussion of current issues, especially progress on the introduction of digital broadcasting and the government's Digital Action Plan. Time will also be given to digital radio by a panel which will include:

Michael Starks, BBC Project Director, Free-to-view

Simon Spanswick, Director, Association for International Broadcasting David Johnston, Digital Director, PhilipsSemiconductors & Digital Television Group

Gerry Stallard. ITC Manager of Technical Information

David Harby, Commercial Manager, Nokia UK Ltd

After lunch the focus will be on News in the changed broadcasting environment since September 11th. New technology made it possible, for the first time, for live coverage of the developing disaster at the World Trade Centre to be carried on virtually all channels.

What problems and what sorts of immediate decisions did the broadcasters face? What sorts of restrictions are there on the stories they cover? Will they change if the emergency continues into the New Year? What has it cost? Who will pay the bill? How does the World Service cover the same issues for its widely disparate audience?

These and other questions will discussed by a panel including:

Roger Mosey, Head of BBC Newsgathering

Phil Harding, BBC World Service Director of English Networks and News

Nick Pollard, Head of Sky News

Richard Tait, Editor-in-Chief, ITN

Tickets £80, student and individual concessions £18.50.
