VLV STUDENT ESSAY COMPETITION 2008 Entry Rules

in association with Channel 4 Television

1. The title of the essay for the 2008 VLV Student Essay Competition is 'Do citizens and consumers need different things from their communications environment, or is this a meaningless distinction?'.

2. You must be studying for a UK registered undergraduate degree, a postgraduate or equivalent qualification, to be eligible to enter the essay competition. VLV Board members, staff and members of the judging panel as well as members of their family may not enter the competition.

3. Written Essays: Essays shall be written in English and must not exceed 2,000 words in length. Audio or video essays: Audio or video essays must not exceed 10 minutes in length.

4. Written essays must the work of one person.

5.Video or audio items may be the work of more than one person.

6.Written essays must be typed, double-spaced and must be attached to an entry form. Video entries must be submitted on a DVD, and must include a transcript. Audio entries must be submitted as either an MP3 file on a CD or as an audio CD file on a disc and must include a transcript.

7. Students must ensure that the entry form is fully completed and signed by themselves and their Course Tutor or Lecturer, and in doing so confirm that the essay submitted is their own work.

8. Essays must be received before 5pm on Friday, 30th May 2008.  Entries will not be returned.

9. All essays must be the original work of the author, or in the case of a video or audio item must be the original work of the production team, and must not have been previously published.

10. If the winning entry is in the form of a video or audio item, the cash prize of £500 will be shared between the members of the production team. If the winning entry is in the form of a video or audio item, a total of no more than 4 work experience places will be awarded.

11. The winning entry in each category will receive a cash prize of £500 and the top two entries in each category will receive two weeks work experience in a television or radio production company.

12. The judging panel reserve the right to split the cash prizes of £500 between more than one entry if more than one entry is deemed to be of equal merit.

13. VLV may publish or distribute the winning essay or essays in any medium, including electronically, after the winning entry is announced.

14. Judging will be by a panel determined by VLV and its decision shall be final.
