Voice of the Listener and Viewer 2007 Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting
to be presented at the VLV Spring Conference, 23 April 2008
Dear Member
We are very grateful to members for a strong response again to the request for nominations for the VLV Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting. Yet again the results were very diversely based and
show what a breadth of programmes we find of value.
The voting forms for the final round are below and we do hope that you will find the time to vote in large numbers for the ultimate winners.
We have a new television category this year, Best Childrens' Programme. VLV is increasingly concerned about locally produced programmes for children and the decline of original production particularly within the commercial sector. We feel it important to acknowledge those who continue to produce outstanding programmes in the field and hope that you will find time to view some of them and vote.
Although the nomination papers included digital programmes for both television and radio we did not get sufficient response to put forward to the final voting stages any programmes initiated on
digital networks. We do however use the forms to gather data on members' conversion to digital and this year ownership levels of digital receivers have risen to 50% for both television and radio
amongst those responding. These levels continue to beg the question as to how easy total conversion by 2012 will be.
The Awards will be presented during the VLV Spring Conference on Wednesday 23rd April at the Royal Geological Society in Burlington House, Piccadilly. This is always a very entertaining occasion, well attended by well-known winners and we do hope as many members as possible will attend this occasion and also a very interesting and stimulating conference.
Please do take the opportunity to vote for your favourite programmes and presenters and vote as soon as possible, at the very latest for receipt by Friday, 7th March.
Your sincerely,
John Clark

The VLV Award winner for 2007 will be announced at the Spring Conference on 23rd April at 1.45pm. This event is being organised by John Clark. Howard Goodall will present the awards.

Howard was the recipient of VLV's Special Award for Educational Broadcasting introduced last year in memory of Naomi Sargant. He was appointed Ambassador for Singing in 2007 to lead a £40 million programme to improve singing in primary schools. Howard is a prolific composer, conductor and broadcaster whose music will be familiar to many through the theme tunes he has written for television shows such as Blackadder, Mr Bean, The Catherine Tate Show and the Vicar of Dibley, including several shows he has produced for Channel 4, most recently, How Music Works. His composition O Lord God, Time and Eternity was performed at the Service of Remembrance for the Iraq War at St Paul's Cathedral in 2003, and his Eternal Light: a Requiem will receive its world premiere at Sadler's Wells later this year.
