'Dear Carol,

Thank you very much indeed for your letter.

Needless to say, I am truly delighted and honoured that VLV members should have voted to give me the Award for the Best Individual Contributor to Television 2010.  I would most certainly have attended the Conference had it been possible for me to do so, but - to my considerable dismay - I am commited to lecturing in South Africa at that time so I cannot be with you.

I would be most grateful nonetheless if you would convey my thanks to the Conference for this very considerable honour.

Yours very sincerely - David Attenborough'

Special Awards -

VLV's NAOMI SARGANT EDUCATION AWARD -

Voice of the Listener & Viewer's Naomi Sargant Memorial Award for Educational Programmes.  The late Professor Naomi Sargant, (Lady McIntosh), was a member of the VLV Board and a Trustee of The Voice of the Listener Trust.  She was a Vice Chancellor of the Open University and Channel 4's first commissioning editor for Educational Programmes.  A passionate supporter of life long learning, formal and informal, she ensured that VLV became actively engaged in adult education and media literacy.

Brian Cox

The Winner was Professor Brian Cox

Unfortunately Brian was in Scotland filming but he sent us this note:

It is a real honour to be given this award by the Voice of the Listener & Viewer, and I am sorry that I can’t be there in person to collect it.  To receive an award from an organization that exists primarily to promote and protect quality in broadcasting is of particular value to me. I believe that the BBC is uniquely placed to deliver high quality documentary programming; there is no other organization on the planet with the track record and expertise to make programs like Wonders of the Solar System.  Such programs are important to Britain because we know that many people, particularly the young, get their inspiration from Television.  Preliminary figures for this academic year show that applications to study physics at University are up 17.9% year-on year, with Astronomy up 38%.  This, as far as my University colleagues can tell, is in a large part down to the success of the BBCs year of science, of which Wonders of the Solar System was a part.  This is the value of quality television.  It can play a key role in changing the behavior of children and adults alike, and therefore I believe make a real difference to our society.  I have to say, being a scientist, that this is an evidence-based claim!

Thank you, therefore, to the BBC, for having the expertise and commitment to make the worlds best scientific documentary series, and thank you to the Voice of the Listener and Viewer for recognizing Wonders of the Solar System in this Way.

Kind Regards -  Brian
