FIVE FACTS ABOUT GOING DIGITAL

The digital TV switchover has started and takes place around the UK at different times. To find out when you switch, use the postcode checker on the Digital UK website at www.digitaluk.co.uk, call 0845 6 505050, or textphone 0845 234 0380.  Our top five facts will also give you some help along the way.

1. Check if you already have digital

If you have more than the five standard channels or get your TV via Freeview, freesat, satellite or cable then you are already enjoying the benefits of digital TV. Check this applies to all sets in your home.

2. Digital TV gives you more channels and services

You’ll receive a greater selection of TV channels such as BBC3, ITV2 and More 4. In addition, you’ll receive radio stations, subtitling and using some products, audio description.

3. You don’t have to buy a new TV

If you aren’t already watching digital, almost all sets can be converted with a digital box. However, if you do want to buy a new TV, look for the digital tick logo. This means it’s designed to work through the switchover.

4. It doesn’t have to be expensive

Prices will vary depending on which service you choose but, there are two ways of going digital:

• A one-off payment for reception equipment to enable services such as Freeview or Freesat  to be viewed.

• A monthly subscription with services such as Sky TV or Virgin Media

 5. Check if you qualify for help

The Switchover Help Scheme can provide eligible people with assistance to convert one TV to digital. You’ll be eligible if you are 75 or over, registered blind or partially sighted, entitled to certain disability allowances, or have lived in a care home for six month or more. Most people will be asked to contribute £40 towards the help but, if you’re eligible and in receipt of pension credit, income support or income-based jobseeker's allowances, it’s free.
