What does VLV do?

VLV works to keep listeners and viewers informed about current developments in British broadcasting, including proposed new legislation, public consultation on broadcasting policy and the likely impact of digital technology. Through policy briefings, responses to public consultations, seminars, conferences, bulletins and via the web, VLV works to ensure that members and the general public get their say in broadcasting policy and industry practice.

Described in the press recently as ' the most important champion of television and radio consumers by consistently pressing for the retention and extension of high quality public service broadcasting,' * VLV was founded in 1983 by Jocelyn Hay CBE and played the leading role in getting listener and viewer opinion recognised and taken account of by broadcasters and policy makers. Unlike any other body, VLV works across the whole range of broadcasting issues, promoting the audience interest, and the recognition that viewers and listeners are citizens as well as consumers.

How is VLV funded?

VLV is funded by membership subscriptions, generous individual donations and grants from charitable foundations.

Where is VLV based?

VLV's main offices are based in Gravesend, Kent, though much work is done in London. As well as being the hub of VLV activity, the head office houses a specialist library on broadcasting policy which is available for reference use by prior arrangement and the payment of a small administration fee. You can contact the office staff Mon - Thurs  9.30  - 5 on  01474 352835 or e-mail info@vlv.org.uk

Who supports VLV?

VLV has many high-profile supporters, including Sir David Attenborough, Jon Snow, Michael Palin, Sir John Tusa, Dame Mary Peters and Lord Puttnam of Queensgate, as well as our Founder, Jocelyn Hay. Other donors also support VLV's work. As well as members of the general public, the informed membership includes many eniment former broadcasters, academic and policy experts and students. Members and other supporters make donations to help to fund VLV operations and keep prices affordable so no one is excluded from taking part in VLV activities or being a member on the basis of price.

Can anyone attend VLV Conferences and the Awards?

Absolutely. VLV Conferences are open to all. However, VLV members are given priority booking, and as availability and capacity for events are limited, non-members cannot be guaranteed tickets for VLV Conferences or other events. More information about upcoming conferences can be found here, and about previous conferences here. The VLV Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting are presented at the VLV Spring Conference and many stars, leading broadcasters and producers attend to collect their Awards from the celebrity presenter.
