Regulators and other Official Bodies

As a representative body for listeners and viewers, VLV is in frequent contact with government bodies and many academic, professional and consumer bodies concerned with broadcasting. VLV prepares submissions and responses to inquiries by government departments and other regulatory bodies. These play an important part in shaping future policy for broadcasting and all our main public.

Ofcom The UK's media and communications regulator. It inherits the duties of five former regulators: the Broadcasting Standards Commission, the Independent Television Commission, Oftel, the Radio Authority and the Radiocommunications Authority.

S4C Authority The S4C Authority is a regulator and broadcasting authority related to S4C television, the Welsh language channel.

The Advertising Standards Authority The ASA was set up in 1962 to make sure that non-broadcast advertisements appearing in the UK are legal, decent, honest and truthful.

The Authority protects the public by ensuring that the rules in the British Codes of Advertising and Sales Promotion are followed by everyone who prepares and publishes advertisements.

British Board of Film The BBFC is an independent body that has classified cinema films since its inception in 1912, and video releases since the Video Recordings Act in 1984.

The body aims to bring a degree of uniformity to film classification across the nation. Statutory powers remain with local councils who may override any BBFC classification or editing recommendations.

National Consumer Council

The National Consumer Council (NCC) makes a practical difference to the lives of consumers around the UK, using its insight into consumer needs to advocate change.

Churches' Media Council

The Churches’ Media Council is the ecumenical organisation established by the Churches to advance the Christian faith through the media. The Council brings together the Churches, Christian people working in or with the media, the broadcasting authorities, trainers and other relevant national bodies and also works with other faiths.


Consumers' Association

Which? fights for consumers' rights by campaigning to make sure consumers get treated fairly and by publishing magazines, books and websites to help people make the right choice for them.

Public Voice

Public Voice, of which VLV is a leading member, is a voluntary sector coalition working for citizens' interests in communications.

National Council of Women

National Council of Women aim to interest and educate women in local and national affairs and to represent their views at the highest possible level, and to encourage them to take an active part in public life.

Internet Watch 

Internet Watch works in partnership with internet service providers, telecommunication companies, mobile operators, software providers, the police, government and the public to minimise the availability of online illegal content, particularly child abuse images.

Save Kids TV

Save Kid's TV is a coalition of parents, producers, artists, educators and others concerned about screen-based media for children in the UK.  We aim to press broadcasting regulators and the Government to acknowledge the value of children's television, and protect it in the face of growing financial pressures.

European Institute for the Media

The European Institute for the Media (EIM) is a think tank for research and strategy concerning developments in European media and communications, based in Dortmund.

BEUC in Brussels

BEUC, the European Consumers' Organisation, is the Brussels based federation of 40 independent national consumer organisations from the EU, accession and EEA countries. Its job is to try to influence, in the consumer interest, the development of EU policy and to promote and defend the interests of all European consumers.

Digital TV Consumer

Digital TV Consumer test reports, gives unibiased, free advice on digital TV products based on indepedent testing. This new website, which has been set up with funding from DTI, is designed to help consumers choose the equipment needed to switch to digital television.

Digital TV Group

The DTG is an independent industry association for digital TV in the UK. It is neutral as regards to platform and technology.

Digital UK

Digital UK is an independent, non-profit organisation leading the process of digital switchover in the UK, providing important information on the process and what the consumer needs to do when it occurs.
