Welsh E-Minister and BBC, S4, ITC and other
speakers consider the future for
Broadcasting, New Media Services and Broadband
in Wales in Cardiff on 28 February
Speakers from the BBC and ITC in London
will join Andrew Davies, E-Minister for Wales, the chair of the Welsh
independent producers’ association, TAC, leading academics, consumer groups
and the Controllers of BBC Wales, S4C, HTV and Yes Television in Cardiff
on 28 February to consider the future of broadcasting, new media services
and broadband in Wales.
The speakers will include:

Among the issues they will consider are:
The implications for Wales, and the UK
as a whole, of the new Communications Bill
(expected in April) and government plans
to:

merge five of the existing regulators into
a single super regulator, OFCOM;
-
introduce a lighter regulatory regime, and
move towards self-regulation;
-
change the rules on media ownership, paving
the way for a single ITV company;
-
difficulties in the reception of digital terrestrial
television Wales;
-
the roll-out of broadband;
-
how to develop opportunities for the creative
industries and independent producers to benefit from the new media services,
technology and e-commerce
Commenting, VLV chairman, Jocelyn Hay (born
and brought up in Swansea) said: The conference is well-timed in the run-up
to the new Communications Bill which could change the face of British broadcasting
for ever.
It will provide a rare opportunity for
many different interests to come together to consider how the quality and
range of broadcast services in Wales can be maintained in the face of competition,
and how new media services, delivery methods and indigenous production
can be developed to the benefit of all concerned .
