Broadcasting, New Media Services and Broadband in Wales in Cardiff on 28 February

Speakers from the BBC and ITC in London will join Andrew Davies, E-Minister for Wales,  the chair of the Welsh independent producers’ association, TAC, leading academics, consumer groups and the Controllers of BBC Wales, S4C, HTV and Yes Television in Cardiff on 28 February to consider the future of broadcasting, new media services and broadband in Wales.

Andrew Davies, E-Minister for Wales
Professor Ian Hargreaves, School of Journalism and Media Studies, Cardiff University
Jocelyn Hay, Chairman, Voice of the Listener & Viewer
Huw Jones, Chief Executive, S4C

Elin Rhys, Teledu-Telesgop, Chairman, TAC, Welsh Independent Producers Ass.
Huw Price-Stephens, Controller of Technology, Yes Television
Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales

Among the issues they will consider are:

The implications for Wales, and the UK as a whole, of the new Communications Bill
(expected in April) and government plans to:

  • merge five of the existing regulators into a single super regulator, OFCOM;
  • introduce a lighter regulatory regime, and move towards self-regulation;
  • change the rules on media ownership, paving the way for a single ITV company;
  • difficulties in the reception of digital terrestrial television Wales;
  • the roll-out of broadband;
  • how to develop opportunities for the creative industries and independent producers to benefit from the new media services, technology and e-commerce
Commenting, VLV chairman, Jocelyn Hay (born and brought up in Swansea) said: The conference is well-timed in the run-up to the new Communications Bill which could change the face of British broadcasting for ever.

It will provide a rare opportunity for many different interests to come together to consider how the quality and range of broadcast services in Wales can be maintained in the face of competition, and how new media services, delivery methods and indigenous production can be developed to the benefit of all concerned .

Tickets:  £75.  Voluntary organisations: £40, Students: £15, including lunch,
